2014 Martaella Estate Pinot Noir 750ml
The grapes are harvested at night and the fruit is rigorously hand sorted prior to partial destemming. Then the fruit is berry selected before open top fermentation. With ideal fruit and stem maturity, we decided for the third year to ferment several clones with ~25% whole cluster for this vintage. Cold soaked for 8 days, indigenous yeast fermentation lasted for almost two weeks, Aged in 36% new French Oak for 16 months.
In many ways, the 2014 vintage is one for the record books. The third consecutive drought year, Sonoma County received less than half of its average rainfall. The very dry winter and spring allowed for very early bud break, flowering and harvest. With ideal spring weather conditions, the vines were able to complete flowering quickly, and the resulting crop was much larger than average. We received just enough rain in the spring to charge the soil with water, and cool summer weather allowed the vines to thrive resulting in the earliest harvest on record.
Deep ruby in color the vibrant raspberry, Bing cherry and sarsaparilla aromas almost leap from the glass. On the palate the wine’s juicy mouthfeel is supported by cherry and blackberry flavors, building through the mid-palate to the fine grain tannins on the finish. An intriguing blend of power and restraint, this Pinot Noir is both savory and delicately sweet.
This is now the third release of this spectacular single-vineyard Pinot Noir from our estate vineyard at the winery that is named in honor of the mothers of Joe Anderson and Mary Dewane. Only Heirloom Pinot Noir clones were chosen for this intense but delicate Pinot Noir.
