Deep ruby in color with vibrant raspberry, Bing cherry and sarsaparilla aromas leaping from the glass. On the palate, the wine’s juicy mouthfeel is supported by cherry and blackberry flavors, building through the mid-palate and finishing with fine grain tannins. An intriguing blend of power and restraint this Pinot Noir is both savory and delicately sweet.
This is now the third release of this spectacular single-vineyard Pinot Noir from our estate vineyard at the winery that is named in honor of the mothers of Joe Anderson and Mary Dewane. Only heirloom Pinot Noir clones were chosen for this intense but delicate Pinot Noir. The grapes are harvested at night and the fruit was rigorously hand sorted prior to partial destemming and then berry selected before open top fermentation.
Cold soaked for 8 days, indigenous yeast fermentation lasted for almost two weeks. With ideal fruit and stem maturity, we decided once again to ferment several clones with approximately 25% whole clusters for this vintage. Aged 16 months in French oak, 38% new.
A warm February and March led to early bud break in 2015. The warm winter transitioned to May temperatures that were actually colder than in January and February. These cold temperatures at bloom delayed flowering and fruit set was compromised. The poor set resulted in a reduction of yields by as much as 50% in some of our vineyards. The summer weather consisted of characteristic cool nights and foggy mornings and resulted in veraison that was nearly two weeks ahead of 2014. The harvest was our earliest on record for Benovia and ended quickly due to the low yields.
