2016 Tilton Hill Estate Pinot Noir 750ml
98 WE, 93+ RP
Intense violet in color, this alluring and hedonistic wine has amazing extract and purity of fruit focus. Vibrant aromas of vine ripened boysenberry and raspberry soufflé harmonize with East-Indian spice and notes of forest floor. Heady aromas lead to equally vibrant flavors of dark plum, Queen Anne cherry and white pepper. On the palate, juicy red fruits compliment the velvet texture and spicy finish.
After 4 years of drought in Sonoma County the 2016 growing season started with abundant and consistent rainfall, replenishing reservoirs and recharging soils with much needed water. Moderate spring temperatures encouraged the vines out of dormancy with an early bud break. Light but consistent rainfall and moderate temperatures in the spring provided optimal conditions for rapid shoot growth and the growing season got off to a fast and furious pace. Temperatures during bloom were nearly perfect in the Russian River Valley resulting in yields that are likely at, or near, Sonoma County’s historic average. The weather through the summer continued with warm days and cool nights, with very few heat spikes.
This single vineyard Pinot Noir comes from our coldest estate vineyard, which is perched on a ridge top near the town of Freestone, located just a few miles from the Pacific Ocean in the Sonoma Coast AVA. We have planted both heirloom and Dijon clones of Pinot Noir that produce very small clusters to encourage early ripening. The grapes are harvested at night and then rigorously hand sorted prior to destemming into open top fermenters.
